MONROE – A 56-year-old Springfield resident was killed and two others were injured in a car accident on Monday, township police said.

The accident happened near the intersection of Applegarth Road and Lilac Road at approximately 5:15 p.m.

According to police, a 2006 Lincoln Town car was traveling south on Applegarth near Lilac while the second vehicle, a 2006 Infiniti G35, driven by a 26-year-old Monroe resident, traveled north on Applegarth, also near Lilac. The Infiniti allegedly crossed the double yellow line into the southbound traffic colliding with the Lincoln.

The driver and passenger in the Lincoln, described as husband and wife from Springfield, were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for “serious injuries.” However, the driver, the 56-year-old man from Springfield, died from his injuries.

The status of the 52-year-old passenger is unknown at this time.

The driver of the Infiniti was also transported to Robert Wood for minor injuries. Police have not released the names of those involved at this time.

Police are still investigating the accident and trying to determine why allegedly the Infiniti driver crossed the double yellow line into the southbound lane.
